Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit on Tuesday spoke to Republic TV after Priyanka Sharma was granted a bail by the Supreme Court over sharing a viral Mamata Banerjee meme. He said, "We were quite shocked. Infact, in a country of ours where we talk about 'Freedom of Expression', we see a lot of protests on the streets. For example, the cartoonist who was wrongly put behind bars."
He further said: "Priyanka Sharma's arrest is totally gundagardi. The atmosphere of fear has been inculcated in West Bengal by Mamata Banerjee. Priyanka is basically the victim of the same. Police arrested her on what grounds? What sections? Because we have seen similar cases before and they were all resolved quickly. Priyanka was treated like a terrorist, 14-day custody!? Supreme Court then said you have to apologise, that was more shocking.
I also would like to ask those 600 signatories who don't want Modi to come to power. People like Anurag Kashyap, Swara Bhasker, Naseeruddin Shah - none of them spoke a word. I have been questioning these liberals why are you not talking about Priyanka Sharma? You cannot be selective on issues. They can't keep quiet whenever they want to. Sholay ki ek line hai, 'Itna sannata kyu hai?' aur ye in logo pe perfectly fit hota hai. These same people created the same 'intolerance' atmosphere during 2014 elections.
Just because Priyanka Sharma is associated with BJP, they are quiet. Why are they not condemning now? I am not telling them to come on TV and talk but why aren't they even tweeting? I have a message for all the 600 signatories, Tukde-Tukde Gang, Award Wapsi Gang that keep the politics aside and talk on the basis of humanity. Galat ko galat boliye aur sahi ko sahi.
