The verdict pronounced in the Tihar Jail due to security concerns and attack on the convicts on the premises of the Delhi court. On November 14, the court had convicted Singh and Sherawat for killing two men here during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots -- the first conviction in the cases reopened by the SIT.

The Delhi Police had closed the case in 1994 for want of evidence. However, a Special Investigation Team on the riots reopened it.

Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has welcomed the first conviction by a Delhi court in the 1984 riots case saying, ”Justice has finally been meted out to the perpetrators of the heinous crimes. Hope the others involved in the attacks are also soon brought to book for their horrendous acts”.

Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of SAD, has said justice has been served despite the delay. He also blamed Congress for shielding the riot-accused and said that Sikh community awaits award of death sentence to Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal was happy that victims received justice but said she will not rest till 'big fish' are caught.

"Atfer 34 years we say a ray of hope, finally perpetrators will be brought to justice. We are not going to rest till big fish pay for the crimes they committed. We are hopeful about justice but proofs were wiped out since 34 years hence Rahul Gandhi had guts to say Congress not involved. Ambiguity only in Rahul Gandhi's mind about the case."

Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal  from SAD demanded the ban on Congress: "Indian National Congress should have been banned after 1984. Because the main cultprits were the Gandhi family."

HS Phoolka who led the fight for justice for victims of anti-Sikh riots said that 34 years was a long time but better late than never.

"This is great news. Sound justice has been pronounced. This is the beginning of justice. Two judgements are reserved against Sajjan Singh. These people were the followers, now the leaders like Jagdish Tytler must be brought to book. Thirty-four  years is a long time but it’s better late then never."
