Delhi police arrests man accused of slapping Sharad Pawar in 2011

Arvinder Singh, the man who had slapped then Union Minister Sharad Pawar at a public event in Delhi in 2011, has been arrested by the police in Delhi

Arvinder Singh, the man who slapped NCP leader Sharad Pawar in 2011 and was absconding since then, has finally been arrested by the Delhi police. He disappeared during the course of trial and was declared Proclaimed Offender by the Court of Pargati, Ld MM, Patiala House Courts, New Delhi on March 29, 2014. On November 11, police recieved information regarding the whereabouts of Singh following which a team reached the place of information, cornered and nabbed him. Earlier, on being questioned, Arvinder, who is a transporter, said that he attacked Pawar because he was angry about the rising prices and corruption in the country. He was then sent to 14 days of judicial custody.

Attacked Telecom Minister Sukh Ram

According to sources, Arvinder Singh is also accused of slapping former Telecom Minister Sukh Ram in Rohini court premises minutes after the Himachal Pradesh politician was sentenced to jail in a corruption case. Another case was also registered at Parliament Street Police Station against Singh for assaulting a Police Constable on duty at Jantar Mantar.

Granted bail in 2011

District Judge H S Sharma had granted bail to Singh and had directed him not to indulge in any violent activity in the future. While applying for bail, Singh had appealed to the court that he suffered from mental illness and lost his senses minutes before the incident. The court had also directed the IHBAS (Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences) Director to get Singh medically examined from a medical board within 10 days and submit the report. A case under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code were registered at the Connaught Place police station against Singh. 

After the 2011 incident involving Sharad Pawar, there were several reports of tension and sporadic violence in parts of Maharashtra. NCP workers had blocked the Mumbai-Agra National Highway (NH4) near Nagpur to protest the attack. The party also called for a Pune bandh following the incident. After the incident, Sharad Pawar was reported saying, "Let the law take its course."
