In yet another blow to Samajwadi Party's Rampur MP Azam Khan, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Thursday, has filed a money laundering complaint against him, as per sources.
Sources further report that a preliminary inquiry was conducted by the ED a few weeks ago in connection with a money-laundering angle. The ED had reportedly sought papers from the UP Police which has already investigated into the SP leader.
The ED has now reportedly come to the conclusion that there appears to be a money-laundering angle into the ongoing investigation of the Rampur MP and has now registered an ECIR which is the ED's equivalent FIR, as per sources. The ED is now probing the money trail through various companies connecting Azam Khan.
Earlier in the day, Section 144 had been imposed in Rampur in light of Samajwadi party's protest against SP MP Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam Khan's arrest on Wednesday during a raid in Mohammed Ali Jauhar University. Abdullah had been taken into custody by the Rampur police earlier in the day for obstructing search operations in Mohammed Ali Jauhar University.
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday carried out raids at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and recovered more than 100 expensive books allegedly stolen from other institutes in Rampur. Azam Khan, his wife, and son are all trustees in the University. Khan is the Chancellor of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.
Earlier last week, the district authorities listed Samajwadi leader as a 'land mafia' in the anti-land mafia portal that was introduced by the Yogi Adityanath government for allegedly forcibly taking land from farmers to construct the Mohammed Ali Jauhar University, as per sources. During this week, the authorities have reportedly registered around 13 cases against him in connection with land grabbing between the years 2006-2016.
Following this move, in a bid to defend Khan, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had constituted a 21-member committee, led by the leader of opposition in the Legislative Council Ahmad Hasan, to probe "fake cases" lodged against party MP Azam Khan in Rampur.
