Extreme Eid provocation in Kashmir: J&K police constable and BJP leader killed by terrorists, while pelters target forces

Terrorists on Wednesday attacked and killed a Jammu and Kashmir Police SPO who was on leave for Eid and had gone to offer prayers, while in another attack, Shabir Ahmed Bhat, a party leader of the BJP, was killed after having been abducted on Tuesday evening.

Update at 11:24 am - Pakistan-based proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen behind the killing of J&K police constable Fayaz Ahmed Shah who was on leave for Eid: Police 


Terrorists on Wednesday attacked and killed a Jammu and Kashmir Police SPO who was on leave for Eid and had gone to offer prayers, while in another attack, Shabir Ahmed Bhat, a party leader of the BJP, was killed after having been abducted on Tuesday evening. 

Constable Fayaz Ahmed Shah, the son of Abdul Rehman Shah, was 34 years old and was posted to SOG Kulgam. J&K DGP SP Vaid condemned the killing of SPO Shah, reiterating the circumstances of the terrorists' attack -- "he had come to celebrate Eid and was killed by terrorists."

Shabir Bhat, on the other hand, was killed in Pulwama district. A massive search operation had been launched following his kidnapping and an encounter broke out before his body was found. The Kashmir BJP issued a press release terming the killing barbaric.

The statement read:

"Pained to learn about the brutal murder of our Constituency President & IT Social Media Incharge Pulwama Shabir Ahmed Bhat in Pulwama"

"Our deepest condolences to his family. Militants must realize that they cannot stop the youth of the valley from choosing a better future for themselves.”

"BJP stands firmly with the family of Shaheed Shabir Ahmed Bhat in this moment of immense grief."

BJP party president Amit Shah posted a statement on twitter condemning the killing:

A number of incidents of attempted terrorism and provocation have taken place since Tuesday night, despite it being Eid. 

In Anantnag, heavy stone-pelting was witnessed following Eid prayers on Wednesday morning. The pelting took place near the Mirza Afzal Beg Hospital, with a J&K police van coming under attack. In capital Srinagar, meanwhile, clashes broke out between security forces and protesters, with the latter unfurling Pakistan and ISIS flags. Meanwhile, in Bijbehara, a CRPF company came under attack from terrorists. 

Speaking to Republic TV, SP Vaid acknowledged the pelting incidents and said that they were being dealt with effectively.

Here is a complete list of the incidents that have taken place:

  1. Stone-pelting at Janglat Mandi, Anantnag: The incident took place on Wednesday morning after Eid prayers at Mirza Afzal Beg Hospital in Anantnag. Pelters attacked a Police van with stones, bricks and sticks. 

     

  2. Protest after Eid Namaz in Srinagar: Clash between security forces and protesters who were unfurling Pakistan and ISIS flags, along with banners that read "Musa Army" 

     

  3. Terrorists shoot SPO Fayaz Ahmed Shah on Eid vacation: Terrorists shot dead a J&K Police SPO Fayaz Ahmed Shah, a resident of  Zazripora at Eidghah, Augam, in Kulgam. He was shot when he came out after Namaz prayers. Fayaz was posted in SOG Kulgam.
  4. BJP worker shot dead by terrorists in Pulwama:  Shabir Ahmad Bhat had left for Pulwama on Tuesday evening to celebrate Eid at his native place. He was abducted close to his home. A massive manhunt was launched by police to trace him, and his bullet-ridden body was found after an encounter. Bhat is the third BJP leader to be killed by unidentified gunmen in South Kashmir in the past one year.  BJP J&K Chief Ravinder Raina said "the killers of 'Shaheed' Shabir Bhat have no religion and respect for Eid-ul-Azha as this festival spreads love and peace, not hatred
  5. Terrorists attack CRPF party in Bijbehara: Unknown terrorists riding on a bike fired few rounds towards the main gate of G/90 Bn which was retaliated to promptly by a sentry while the terrorists managed to escape. No casualties have been reported. Soon after the attack, searches were launched with the help of additional reinforcements in the area to trace out the attacker..
  6. Protests, clashes follow Eid prayers in Sopore: Sopore area of North Kashmir witnessed clashes, with protests taking place after the culmination of congregational Eid prayers. A group of youths allegedly started pelting stones at forces who were deployed at Main Chowk Sopore to maintain law and order. The forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.

The terrorism, pelting and provocation comes just days after Imran Khan took oath as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, speaking about peace with neighbours.
