Hyderabad police arrest Maoist couple under the UAPA Act

Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested a couple under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for allegedly taking part in Maoist activities.

The Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested a couple under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for allegedly taking part in the activities of the banned CPI (Maoist) party. According to Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat, the couple- N Ravi Sharma, Professional Revolutionary of CPI (Maoist) Party and his wife Anuradha, were out on bail. 

About the arrest

According to reports, the arrested couple was connected with the Maoist activities in Telangana since June 2019. A special police team was hired to search the couple's house at LB Nagar in Hyderabad. Upon the investigation, the police found Maoist literature books, three laptops, pen drives, memory cards, and correspondence with the banned CPI (Maoist). Further, the police registered a case against them under the relevant IPC sections and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Telangana State Public Security Act, 2012.

Earlier involvements in Maoist activities 

According to reports, the accused, N Ravi Sharma was earlier involved in different posts in the people's war group (PWG). He was arrested in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand in October 2009. However, he was and released on bail in April 2016, revealed the police. Further reports stated that after his release, Sharma had been residing in Hyderabad with his wife who is a former CPI (Maoist) state committee member. Sharma was also actively involved in the formation of 'All India Forum against Hindutwa Fascist Offensive' in February 2019 in Delhi. According to Bhagwat, the accused also frequently went underground for long periods and took part in meetings of top Maoists in Chhattisgarh and other parts of the country.
