The Jharkhand's Dumka police on Sunday have arrested a Maoist Akash Murmu alias Saheb Hansda from Pune. Akash was reportedly involved in the attack on a polling party on April 24, 2014, during the Lok Sabha elections. He was also allegedly involved in the killing of then Superintendent of Police of Dumka district, Amarjit Balihar, six years ago, the officials said.

Speaking to the media Dumka Superintendent of Police (SP) YS Ramesh said, "Akash Murmu alias Saheb Hansda alias Saibram Hembram, who carried a reward of Rs one lakh on his head, was arrested in Maharashtra's Pune on Sunday and brought here during the day. Hansda was working as a labourer to evade arrest. The Maoist is wanted in several cases in Dumka and Pakur districts."

Acting on a tip-off about his whereabouts in Pune, a police team from Dumka went to the city and nabbed the 28- year-old Maoist with the assistance of the Pune Police, Ramesh said. "Hansda, who was a member of the firing squad of the CPI (Maoist), was involved in the killing of Balihar, two other policemen and their driver on July 2, 2013. He was also involved in the attack on a polling party on April 24, 2014, during the Lok Sabha elections," Ramesh added.

Earlier on October 4, two jawans were martyred in Jharkhand in a Police-Maoist encounter. As per sources, Jharkhand Police carried out the encounter operation after receiving information that Maoists are planning to carry out attacks in some part of Jharkhand. Sources also informed that the area where the encounter operation took place is 40 kilometres from the state's capital Ranchi. The encounter operation went on for a few hours, claiming the lives of two jawans.

According to reports, Maoists opened fire on security forces. Following a tip that members of the banned CPI (Maoist) group had gathered near Dassam falls between Bundu and Namkum, security forces rushed to the area around 4 am, Additional Director General of Police Murari Lal Meena told PTI. "The Maoists opened fire on the security forces and two of our district jawans suffered bullet injuries. While one jawan was declared brought dead at the hospital, another succumbed during treatment," the ADGP said.
