The student-led agitation demanding justice for the alleged murder and rape of an engineering student from Raichuru district of Karnataka has gathered steam in the last week. On Thursday afternoon over 500 students and residents gathered on the streets of Raichuru and held a demonstration. Students from across various outfits held placards and demanded speedier justice.

The protests in Raichuru echoed in Bengaluru with over 200 women and students gathering in the city streets to show solidarity for the cause.

A student said, “We have taken to the streets because it’s time we put an end to crimes against women. We have held a silent protest if justice is not granted then we will escalate the protests. We want justice at the earliest.”

CID Sleuths Collect Crucial Evidence

CID sleuths who have been investigating the case escorted the suspect to the crime scene on Thursday evening. Sources say that the CID sleuths have recovered crucial evidence from the suspect’s house in connection to the case and his bike has also been seized. Earlier, he was interrogated in connection to the case.

“We Don’t Want This To Repeat And We Want Justice For Our Daughter”, the girl’s parents have demanded the accused to be brought to book.

“I thank students and activists who were part of the agitation for supporting our campaign. I advise parents to be cordial with their children and also keep a rack of their daily activities. Parents should not neglect their children. We want justice for our daughter.”

Police Resort to Lathi Charge During Protests

Police resorted to lathi charge reportedly after some students indulged in stone pelting when they laid siege to the deputy commissioner’s office. A man was arrested on Friday morning and booked under IPC sections 142,147, 332 and 149 for pelting stones on the police.

Asham Ramesh, an activist who protested in Bengaluru said, “ We are not demanding a CBI probe because when the CID is already investigating the case any intervention would amount to hamper the progress of the case. We are also seeing what challenges central agencies are facing. We will wait for the CID sleuths to give us justice, if not then the case will have to be probed by a more competent agency.”

With the agitation getting bigger by the day, the pressure is mounting on the government to bring the perpetrator to book. Students and activists have warned that they will intensify their protests if the justice is delayed. The online campaign by students demanding justice for the girl has meanwhile gone viral with many celebrities and netizens supporting it.
