A number of leaders and politicians have raised questions over the prevailing law and order situation in Karnataka following the shocking stabbing of Lokayukta Vishwanath Shetty in the Ombudsman's office in Bengaluru.

Union minister of statistics and programme implementation Sadananda Gowda has written:

"I am shell shocked at the incident #Karnataka #Lokayukta #Judge Sri Vishwanath Shetty stabbed by an person at his chamber . This happens to an Hon'ble Judge in karnataka #Lawlessness prevails in karnataka #Ask4SafeKarnataka
Let's pray for Sri Vishwanath Shetty."

"Criminals roam freely in Karnataka First Congress MLA son Attacks , Now Judge Being stabbed at his office. It's #GoondaSidduSarakara Home Minister are you there Sri @RLR_BTM"

The second tweet referred to the assault by Congress leader Mohammad Haris Nalapad on a 24-year-old man at a restaurant in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya has written:

"No one is safe in Congress ruled Karnataka, no one. Even the Lokayukta can be stabbed in broad daylight and the administration just looks on... @siddaramaiah should be ashamed of presiding over a non existent government!"

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda also slammed the government (watch what he had to say in the video above):

"What is the meaning of this attack? In which state are we? Are we in goonda-raj? where is the law & order in Karnataka?"

Karnataka Lokayukta Vishwanath Shetty's condition is said to be stable. He is currently at Bengaluru's Mallya Hospital. The state's chief minister Siddaramaiah visited the hospital and gave the following update:

"Lokayukta was stabbed two times. He is undergoing scans. The accused had given a complaint and insisted on meeting the Lokayukta. He attacked and tried to kill using a big weapon.

I met him (Lokayukta Vishwanath Shetty) and pray for his recovery.

I spoke to the doctor and will see if there were lapses. Attackers name is Tej Raj Sharma."
