The government is all set to table the triple talaq bill in the Parliament on Friday a day after approving an amendment to the bill. This will be a renewed attempt by the government to nudge the opposition to clear the draft which makes instant triple talaq 'a criminal offence'. Law Minister Ravi Shankar will re-introduce the bill where three changes have been proposed in the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill.
The Bill proposes that if a person cannot resort to triple talaq via:
If he commits the offence, he will suffer a three-year jail term which will be non-bailable.
If the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill gets approved in the upper house then the bill will have to go back to Lok Sabha for approval of the proposed amendments. Earlier, the Narendra Modi led-government tabled the bill the Lok Sabha on 29 December, however, the bill got stalled later in the Rajya Sabha amid protests by the opposition. Many parties demanded the provision of bail.
