Punjab: Locals protest demanding justice for Dalit man who was beaten to death

After a Dalit man was allegedly thrashed to death in Punjab, locals in Sangur district have called for protests demanding justice for the 37-year-old victim

After a Dalit man was trashed to death in Punjab locals in Sangur district have called for protests demanding justice for the 37-year-old victim. The locals have been protesting outside the SDM office, meanwhile, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission assured they will urge the police to take action against the culprits. Various organisations have been demanding justice for the victim.

"We will continue our protest until justice is delivered to the deceased's family. We are demanding compensation as well as a government job to one of the family members. We will neither allow post-mortem of the body now will conduct funeral until our demands are met," a protestor said.

"Have taken cognisance but there've been no arrests yet. We'll take action against erring cops too. We will continue our protest until justice is delivered to the deceased's family." a protestor said.

Dalit man thrashed to death by four men 

On November 17, a 37-year-old man identified as Jagmail, a native of Changaliwali village was allegedly trashed by some men with whom he had a dispute. According to the police, Jagmail had a dispute with Rinku and some other men. Rinku along with some other people took Jagmail to his house where they claim he was brutally thrashed by them. The victim was taken to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research where he reportedly succumbed to his injuries. The doctors say his legs were amputated and he was even forced to drink his urine.

FIR lodged into the matter

Following the incident, Punam Kangra a member of Punjab State SC Commission said an FIR has been lodged into the matter. "A strict action will be taken against the accused as well as the police if they have delayed the investigation in the matter," she added. According to sources, a case has been registered against the accused of the abduction and wrongful confinement under various sections of the Indian Penal Cose (IPC) and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at Lehra Police station.
