The Supreme Court on Friday will hear the plea of CBI Director Alok Verma, who has been divested of his role and sent on leave by the government under the recommendations of the CVC. He will be represented in the topmost court by Senior Advocate Fali Nariman, while on the other side, the government will be represented by Attorney General KK Venugopal. For CVC, newly appointed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will be spearheading in the case.

Verma had filed a petition in the apex court on Wednesday, seeking quashing of his being put on leave while also terming the order of CVC as illegal. The petition lists Alok Kumar Verma IPS as petitioner and the Union of India (Department of Personnel and Training) and the Central Vigilance Commission as respondents.

The recent turn of events came after the government stepped into the in-fight within CBI on the wee hours of Wednesday, and decided to send both Verma and Asthana on a leave. Further, for the interim period, IPS Nageshwar Rao was elevated as the CBI boss. CBI's No.1 Verma was accused by Asthana of corruption, though, the agency had booked case of bribery against Asthana himself earlier this month.

Another big case which will be heard in the SC will be the petition filed by Prashant Bhushan's NGO Common Cause. Bhushan will be arguing on behalf of his own NGO, while Asthana will be represented by Senior Advocate Amarendra Saran. The senior lawyer is seeking dismissal of IPS Nageshwar Rao as the interim CBI boss, while also calling for removal of Rakesh Asthana from CBI and a SIT probe into the cases of corruption against the officers of the agency.
