Tis Hazari: Two IPS officers transferred after Delhi HC's order

While the Delhi HC ordered-judicial probe into the Tis Hazari tussle continues, two IPS officers have been transferred following the incident that took place between Police and lawyers at Tis Hazari Court Complex. As per the order, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), North, Sanjay Singh has been transferred to the licensing and transport department as Special Commissioner of Police. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Harender Kumar Singh has been appointed DCP, Railways, according to an order by the Delhi Government. Dinesh Kumar Gupta, who is DCP Railways, will take charge as Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North).

Around 20 cops including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Harender Singh and two Station House Officers (SHOs) and eight lawyers sustained injuries in the scuffle. The high court took Suo moto cognizance of the matter on Sunday, November 10, and directed Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to transfer two officers while directing him not to take any coercive action against any lawyer.

Lawyer-Police protests

Demanding for protection against such violence against cops, thousands of police personnel on November 5, gathered outside the Delhi police headquarters to protest against the lawyers who purportedly assaulted police officers at the Tis Hazari Court on November 2. Police officials demanded a trial against the suspected lawyers. After being assured that demands will be met, the police called off their protest and joined duty.

Likewise, hundreds of lawyers in the Delhi High Court and all district courts abstained from work on November 4, protesting against Delhi police, demanding the arrest of the involved Delhi police officials. Continuing their protests, lawyers are still protesting in various lower courts around Delhi in spite of the Bar Council of India urging the lawyers to resume duty, waiting for the findings of the judicial probe. BCI chief Manan Mishra has condemned the police action in the case but has also assured those lawyers responsible will be punished.
