Tis Hazari: 'Use good officers for settlement with police', says HC

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked the lawyers who moved a petition seeking disciplinary action against the Delhi police personnel for carrying out agitation outside the police headquarters against the Tis Hazari incident to 'use their good officers for settlement.' The petition was filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Lakra after scores of police personnel laid siege to the police headquarters to protest against attacks on police officers at Delhi courts following recent clashes with lawyers. 

Chief Justice D N Patel refused to give an early hearing to the matter and slated it for February 12 next year. He asked the lawyers to use their good officers for settlement with the police. "Use your good officer for settlement. Please wait and watch. The long date is required and we will see." The petition seeks disciplinary action and initiation of departmental inquiry against several IPS and senior police officers for circulating provocative statements against lawyers on social media. It also demands their dismissal on the grounds that the agitation was in complete contravention of prevalent laws.

Lawyer-Police protests

Demanding for protection against such violence against cops, thousands of police personnel on November 5, gathered outside the Delhi police headquarters to protest against the lawyers who purportedly assaulted police officers at the Tis Hazari Court on November 2. Police officials demanded a trial against the suspected lawyers. After being assured that demands will be met, the police called off their protest and joined duty.

Likewise, hundreds of lawyers in the Delhi High Court and all district courts abstained from work on November 4, protesting against Delhi police, demanding the arrest of the involved Delhi police officials. Continuing their protests, lawyers are still protesting in various lower courts around Delhi in spite of the Bar Council of India urging the lawyers to resume duty, waiting for the findings of the judicial probe. BCI chief Manan Mishra has condemned the police action in the case but has also assured those lawyers responsible will be punished.

Tis Hazari tussle

A sudden scuffle broke out between the lawyers and the police at the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi on November 2. According to the reports, one lawyer has been injured in the fracas and has been rushed to St Stephen's Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. As per the reports, the trigger behind the violence was a rift between the police and lawyers over parking issues in the Tis Hazari premises which turned ugly.
