Taking a tough stance against the assault of civic officials by BJP MLA Akash Vijayvargiya, the Indore sessions court, on Wednesday has denied him bail in the case. He is set to remain in jail till July 11, as per sources but he is also reportedly going to apply for bail on Thursday.
Visuals of protestors revolting against the court's decision have been seen. The video shows a large crowd surrounding the police vehicle demanding his release.
Reacting to the bail rejection by the Indore court, Madhya Pradesh Law minister PC Sharma said that this kind of arrogance is seen building in the BJP.
"I welcome the court's decision. In Madhya Pradesh, the law rules. It is shameful that an elected representative has assaulted civic officials. This arrogance has developed in BJP which had been ruling the state for 15 years. This behaviour is seen by a son of former government ministers in the state. Both Vijayvargiya and Kamal Patel's son doe this kind of behaviour only. They are taking the law into their hands." said Sharma.
In stark contrast, Vijayvargiya's lawyer has rubbished the evidence of the case filed against Akas calling the arrest itself 'questionable'.
"Police has filed a false case against Akash Vijayvargiya who is an MLA of Indore constituency in the court. We had filed for baila against these false accusations which have been rejected by the court now. We have applied to the district judge against this rejection. The evidence based on which the bail was rejected is false and the circumstances under which the arrest was made is questionable," he said.
He also added that it was an MLA's right to question officials' harassing constituents.
"If someone demolishes a property without any notice, the local MLA has the right to question the act. The manner in which these officials harassed the women is shameful. Under such conditions, can't an MLA question the authorities?" he asked.
Earlier in the day, five hours after Republic broke the story of Bengal BJP chief Kailash Vijayawargiya's son Akash Vijayvargiya beating the government official with bats, Police in Indore arrested him.
Police have said that cases have been registered against them on sections IPC 353 147, 148. They have registered cases against 100 people, as per sources.
Following his arrest, his supporters created ruckus on the road. Earlier in the day in a shocking case of brutality, BJP MLA Akash Vijayavargiya was caught on camera thrashing civic workers in broad daylight at Indore, Madhya Pradesh on 26 June. Civic officials had visited the area to tear down a building as a part of the anti-encroachment drive following which Akash Vijaavargiya appeared at the scene and started to physically assault the officials, as BJP party workers joined him in the beating.
Video of the assault shows Akash chasing and beating the officials with a cricket bat, slapping them and tearing their clothes. The MLA verbally abuses these officials as the police officials stand mum, watching him mount the attack on the officials. He used the police lathis and kicked the officials. The police, who initially looked on, controlled the agitated MLA after much of the beating had taken place. The BJP workers joined the beating, following the leader, in chasing the officials to assault them.
On asking Akash's father - BJP West Bengal chief and BJP National Secretary Kailash Vijayavargiya about the incident leading to the arrest of his son, he said, "I do not have any knowledge of this incident. I have no comment to make on this issue." He maintained the same response despite repeated attempts to get a reaction from him.
