Reacting to the Haryana, Haryana police granting parole to the jailed Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh BJP spokesperson Raman Malik on Monday has said that the Khattar-led BJP government in the state is not certifying his character adding that the steps that will be taken will be under the ambit of the law. He also pointed out that it was the present government which had jailed the DSS chief, asking time to analyse the parole order given by the police, in conversation to Republic TV.
"Nobody is certifying anybody. I have to yet analyse the letter granted to him (Rahim). On prima facie, I can say that the government will not do anything that is extra-judicial. It would be in the ambit of the law how we work. We are not desperate. It was this government that arrested him and put him in jail. Rest assured that the government will not do anything against the law," he said.
When asked if this move was done to appease DSS followers in Haryana prior to the Haryana Assembly polls, Malik denied any such motives repeating his claims to analyse and verify the authenticity of the document displayed on the channel.
"It is not that we want to appease anybody and we will go only as per law. I have not read the paper and cannot vouch for the authenticity of the evidence which you are showing on your channel. Let me read the paper and I will come back on the channel and explain it," he added.
On being informed that the parole order stated that Rahim was being granted parole due to good behaviour in jail, he said that the government is only pointing out the fact that Rahim had not committed any crimes in jail.
"I am not sure of what you are reading as I have not gone through the evidence. Second, what you state is only limited to his character in jail and not a character certificate for outside. The government is only saying that he has not committed any crimes in jail, the government is not saying he has not committed any crimes at all," he said.
Expressing helplessness of the authorities to not grant parole if Rahim fulfills all the conditions set by the law, he said:
"If he fulfills the condition as per the law, we have to go according to it. Can you tell the courts that you give a different treatment to A or B if he fulfills the conditions in the law? You cannot."
Earlier in the day, the Manohar Khattar led government in Haryana batted for the parole for jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. He had sought parole for over a month for farming in his fields in Haryana's Sirsa.
The 51-year-old is currently lodged at Sunaria jail in Rohtak after being convicted in two rape cases and murder of a journalist. Following his application for the parole for 42 days, the jail superintendent has written to the Sirsa district administration. In a letter dated June 18, the official sought a report on whether releasing Gurmeet Ram Rahim on parole would be feasible or not.
In August of 2017, the Dera chief was sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping two women. A special CBI court in Panchkula had in January this year also sentenced him and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.
