Reacting to the arrest of two youth on Tuesday, who had allegedly posted a defamatory video on Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy on May 23, former JD(S) state president H Vishwanath has come out in support of the arrest saying that 'freedom of expression' cannot be used to 'talk nonsense.'

"Freedom of the press is in the Constitution. But you can't talk nonsense about an individual or an office. Freedom of expression cannot be used as per one's whims and fancy," he said.

Earlier in the day, as per sources,  High Grounds police have arrested two men identified as Siddaraju and Jaumaraju based on a complaint filed by Lokesh. The complainant has claimed that the two men abused CM HD Kumaraswamy, former PM HD Devegowda and Nikhil Kumaraswamy during a Facebook live on  May 23, according to sources.

Siddaraju and Jaumaraju, residents of Karnataka's Ramanagara district, have since then deleted the video on Facebook after drawing flak on the social media platform.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court said journalist Prashant Kanojia who was arrested for objectionable tweet against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, should be released immediately on bail. Justifying their claims the apex court said that though they do not appreciate his actions, it is no grounds on putting someone behind bars. 

Arrested under charges relating to Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66 of the IT Act, the 26-year-old was lodged in the Lucknow jail and had along with his wife, Jagisha moved the Supreme Court for his release.

This is not the first instance of attempted curbing of freedom of the press. The Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy himself had filed an FIR against Vishwavani editor Vishweshwar Bhat for criminal breach of trust, criminal defamation, forgery, fraud, intentional insult to breach peace amongst others, as he had carried an article with alleged derogatory remarks about Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy's son - Nikhil Gowda.
