In an unprecedented incident, the Congress party allegedly admitted that former PM Rajiv Gandhi supervised the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in which thousands of Sikhs were massacred in the aftermath of the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards. In a video shared by Union Minister and SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Twitter, she has alleged that Congress party in the presence of Sonia Gandhi admitted on the floor of the Parliament that it was Rajiv Gandhi who ordered the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in 1984.

In the video shared by the Union Minister, Lok Sabha member Sukhbir Singh Badal can be seen addressing the Lower House in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Amit Shah among other leaders, when he accidentally said that Rahul Gandhi had instructed the killings Sikhs during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. However, immediately correcting him, the Congress party broke into a chaos and called out former PM Rajiv Gandhi's name.

"Thousands of Sikhs were massacred on the instructions of Rahul Gandhiji, at that time Prime Minister, and we did not get justice," Sukhbir Singh Badal said in the video.

At this moment, the Congress leaders led by Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary stood up and shouted to correct the SAD president. Even UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi also looked shocked at his statement. Realising his mistake, Badal corrected himself and said Rajiv Gandhi's name, after being prompted by the Congress leaders.

Sharing the video on social media on Wednesday, Harsimrat Kaur Badal said "so proud they are of this gruesome crime of Rajiv (Rajiv Gandhi) that they don't allow even his son (Rahul Gandhi) to take away its credit from his father".

Earlier in May, 2019, BJP had launched a sharp attack at Rajiv Gandhi, alleging that the "instructions to kill" the Sikhs came from the then Prime Minister's Office in 1984 riots.

"It's on record of Nanavati Commission that probed the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the biggest genocide of India in which the government killed its own citizens, that instructions to kill came directly from the then PM Rajiv Gandhi's office," the BJP had posted on Twitter, adding, "The country awaits justice for this karma."

Anti-Sikh riots had broken out after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by her two Sikh bodyguards.
