On Saturday, much of the opposition will be present in West Bengal, sharing the stage with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee as the 'Mahagathabandhan' tries to show its unity ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. All these parties will be getting together as they look to fight BJP and PM Modi in the upcoming elections.

The following political bigwigs will be present along with Mamata Banerjee as the opposition tries to show its unity:

  • AkhileshYadav (SP)
  • Satish Misra (BSP)
  • N Chandrababu Naidu (TDP)
  • MK Stalin (DMK)
  • HD Kumaraswamy and HD Devegowda (JDS)
  • Mallikarjun Kharge/ Abhishek Manu Singhvi (Congress)
  • Arvind Kejriwal (AAP)
  • Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah (NC)
  • Tejaswi Yadav (RJD)
  • Sharad Pawar (NCP)
  • Ajit Singh/Jayant Chowdhury (RLD)
  • Yashwant Sinha
  • Sharad Yadav
  • Shatrughan Sinha
  • Gegong Apang (former Arunachal Pradesh CM)
  • Arun Shourie
  • Hemant Soren
  • Hardik Patel
  • JigneshMevani
  • Lalduwahawma (Oppn leader, Mizoram)

While most of the opposition parties will be represented by their topmost leader, the Congress has decided that it will not be sending its party President Rahul Gandhi or former party chief Sonia Gandhi for the event. Instead, the party will be represented by either of Mallikarjun Kharge or Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Sources have stated that Congress West Bengal leadership suggested Rahul Gandhi that they were willing to fight the upcoming general elections alone, and asked him to not attend the rally.

The get-together of the opposition parties was announced by Mamata in October 2018. She had stated that the 'like-minded' parties, despite any previous grudges, need to work together in order to oust PM Modi in the Lok Sabha elections.

"We have made a publicity campaign committee for January 19 Brigade Sabha. All the opposition parties and leaders have been invited. This is to go against the current BJP government. We have got the permission to hold this event. We have invited everyone as we do not consider anyone small. CPM does a lot of things against me. They do whatever they feel like because they do not have any ideals. But I am not ready to accept that everyone is bad in Left, hence I have invited Kerala CM. Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati, Omar Abdullah, MK Stalin, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi are all invited.  Chandrababu Naidu and Omar Abdullah have confirmed their presence already. Arvind Kejriwal had given confirmation he will join us on Jan 19," she had said back in 2018.
