Three days after he dumped Congress by deciding to go solo in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh polls, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has released a statement reaching out to the rebels within the Congress party and offering them a place in the Samajwadi Party.
“Any Congress members who don't get a ticket in the elections can come and join the Samajwadi Party. Also remember, whenever the Congress party becomes weak, you can find camaraderie only in the Samajwadi Party", the former UP CM said while lending support to Congress rebels.
Last week, Akhilesh had held a press briefing in which he declared his dissociation with Congress for the upcoming state polls. This came as a major setback for the 'Mahagathbandhan' before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls after BSP leader Mayawati also dumped the very same party, stating that 'the Congress is using opposition parties for their own benefits'.
"I have waited enough. I can't wait any longer. We are talking to BSP, but can't wait for Congress. Nobody waits this long in politics. We are not a bechara party. We are a small party in Madhya Pradesh but we count at number 4", Akhilesh had said.
Prior to that, Mayawati had stated, “Congress’ ‘Mahagathbandhan’ will never be strong because of the reckless behaviour of its leaders. Congress is having a day dream that it will defeat the BJP.”
A few days back, Election Commission announced the poll schedules for the states of Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana during a press briefing in New Delhi. The election in the state of Madhya Pradesh will take place in a single phase on November 28, 2018.
After BSP chief Mayawati also declared that her party will contest solo in the upcoming polls, SP Chief Yadav had urged the Congress party to “take everyone together” as he batted out for Congress to be the ringleader for the grand alliance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But with things drastically changing in the political landscape in India, upcoming general elections will bring many surprises.
