In a major development in the murder case of Smriti Irani's aide Surendra Singh in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh said that they have arrested three accused and have recovered the pistol used in the murder.
Briefing the media, he said:
"We recovered the pistol using which he (Surendra Singh) was murdered. We also got a towel from one of the accused that has blood spots on it. Police have taken into account substantive evidence, electronic surveillance, and after intensive interrogation, we came to this conclusion. We had taken into custody 7 people and in those seven people, 3 have been accused, 2 of them are absconding, we are tracking them. We have tracked them and they were seen in multiple locations - Delhi and in Lucknow. It is clear that local level political rivalry was at play and one of the accused father was sent to jail on charges of theft in 2013. On the spot they committed the act, they plotted the murder. The motorcycle belonged to a man called Ramchandra who is a BDC member. We are tracking him as well. We have sent the evidence for forensic test."
In a shocking incident, 50-year-old Surendra Singh who was a former head of the Baraulia village which is about 25 km away from the Amethi district headquarters, was shot at around 11:30 pm on Saturday. He was immediately rushed to a Lucknow hospital but succumbed during treatment, as per Additional Superintendent of Police Daya Ram.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had directed the DGP to take effective action and report back to him, a senior official said, adding that the inspector general in Lucknow was sent to monitor the situation. An FIR was also registered against five persons under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the complaint of Narendra Singh, brother of Surendra Singh.
Union Minister Smriti Irani had flown from Delhi to Amethi and met Surendra Singh's family to offer her condolences. The MP-elect said that Singh was killed so that Amethi could be "terrorised, disintegrated and bowed down".
"My request to all party workers is that we should exercise restraint. On (May) 23, I was given a message that 'take care of Amethi with love'. To the person, who gave me the message, I would like to say that I have received the message loud and clear." Irani had told reporters in Lucknow.
