Rahul Gandhi arrives at Lucknow airport to kickstart his Amethi visit:
Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be paying a two-day visit to his stronghold Amethi from Wednesday, amid the speculations of him being unsure of winning this constituency and contesting from a different seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
During his two-day visit, Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to meet representatives of gram panchayats at Fursatganj and will also take part in the swearing-in of newly elected Bar members in Gauriganj, according to Congress representatives.
While Amethi has been one of the two strong bastions, along with Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh of the Congress party and the Gandhis, it appears like Rahul Gandhi may be rethinking over his decision to contest from Amethi, where he has been coming out victorious since 2004 elections.
Sources earlier told Republic TV that apart from Amethi, the Congress president may also can also consider contesting the polls from Chhindwara - the fortress of newly-installed Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath - as well as Nanded in Maharashtra - another seat which is presently held by the Congress party.
Notably, Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to visit Amethi earlier on January 4 but his visit got cancelled due to a heated debate on the Rafale deal in the Winter session of Parliament. On the same day, Union Minister Smriti Irani also visited Amethi to participate in an array of projects. However, while Rahul Gandhi could not make it to his Amethi, it was viewed as the one of the most crucial political face-off ahead of the general elections.
During her Amethi visit, BJP leader Smriti Irani, who has also been a regular visitor to Amethi in the intervening period, laid several accusations on Rahul Gandhi of snubbing the development of his own constituency. At the same time, Union Minister, who has not yet confirmed on her contest in the upcoming polls, had also guaranteed that the Congress president will lose Amethi in the upcoming polls.
