Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday hit back at the Congress party, accusing its senior leader Kapil Sibal of manufacturing false claim relating to the Rafale deal.
Reacting to Sibal's allegation that Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Rajiv Mehrishi would not fairly investigate the fighter-jet deal given he was the Finance Secretary when the agreement between Indian and French govt was confirmed, Jaitley, in a series of tweets, laid bare the position of Finance Secretary and how anyone holding that post could wouldn't have any say in the deal.
Sibal had on Sunday expressed his doubts over Rajiv Mehrishi's report on the deal, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament before the end of Budget session. The Congress leader had claimed that given the CAG was Finance Secretary in the early months of 2015, he would, in an effort to save himself, save the BJP-led NDA government.
"CAG is going to completely save the government in its report. The whole deal was materialized in the supervision of Rajiv Mehrishi who was the then Finance Secretary. When the negotiations started the Ministry of Finance were part of it," he said.
The former HRD minister further claimed that Mehrishi cannot act against himself as there lies a conflict of interest in doing so.
"This is the corrupt deal and fair investigation should be done, but how can CAG investigate himself when he was the Finance Secretary. There is a clear conflict of interest," he added.
