As NDA nominates Om Birla for the post of speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha, here's what his predecessor Sumitra Mahajan has to say
As the NDA on Tuesday named Kota MP Om Birla as their candidate for the post of the speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha, Sumitra Mahajan has extended her wishes to him. Mahajan who was the speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha did not contest the Lok Sabha elections.

On Tuesday, after Om Birla was chosen as the NDA candidate for the post of Lok Sabha speaker with the support of PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari met former speaker Mahajan. After the meeting, Mahajan said that he is an old friend and that she has faith that he will handle his responsibilities at Lok Sabha very well.
The former speaker of Lok Sabha also added: "Shri Om Birla ji has been nominated for the post of Lok Sabha speaker. I am hoping that he will get the support of everybody. I believe that under your leadership there will be positive discussions in the lower house. Congratulations and best wishes."

Sources have told that leading Opposition parties including Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janta Dal (BJD), AP CM Jagan-led YSRCP have also extended support to Om Birla's candidature for the post of Lok Sabha speaker.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP's Om Birla defeated Congress's Ramnarayan Meena with a huge margin of over 2.5 lakh votes in the Kota-Bundi Parliamentary seat. The 57-year-old leader has served as the Rajasthan MLA thrice and MP twice. Meanwhile, on Monday when the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha began, President Ram Nath Kovind swore in a seven-term member of Parliament Virendra Kumar as the pro tem Speaker of the house. He later administered the oath of office to over 300 MPs.
