In an exclusive interview to Republic TV on Friday, Union Minister Babul Supriyo accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of not helping the state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Jadavpur University incident which led to the situation getting worse inside the university. He also mentioned that just to change the narrative, Mamata Banerjee let the entire incident take place.
Speaking to Republic TV, Babul Supriyo said, "If Mamata Banerjee wanted she could have stopped this entire fiasco that started in the afternoon. By not assisting the VC and by not sending police force she let this incident go up till the evening. The Governor had called Mamata twice. The DGP, the CP, the Home Secretary, and the Chief Secretary were informed about the situation. She let this BJP vs Left battle to happen just because she wanted to change the narrative."
The Union Minister Babul Supriyo on Thursday had visited the Jadavpur University to attend an ABVP event where he was allegedly assaulted by the students who heckled him inside the University. Governor Dhankhar stepped in to take up the issue of the gherao of the Union Minister. Today, both the SFI and the ABVP had called for protests on the Jadavpur University violence.
Earlier, the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee for accusing the Governor of entering the Jadavpur University without informing the state. The TMC Secretary in a press release on Thursday has stated that the Governor did not inform the government and has not taken the State Government into confidence before making the visit.
MP Babul Supriyo on Thursday, was invited by the ABVP members to speak at an event at the University. When he tried to enter the campus for the event, he was blocked by many students, many of whom were members of CPM-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). They gheraoed him and had a verbal confrontation mainly over the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Matters turned worse as Babul Supriyo was stuck inside the campus for at least three hours. He sat on the media OB Van bonnet. The West Bengal Governor and the CRPF rushed to the University and the Kolkata police too were outside the gate with its force. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Suranjan Das, was allegedly attacked in the face-off and has been hospitalised.
