Reacting to Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's resignation revealed on Sunday, BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli has said that Sidhu has always courted controversy by doubting the Balakot airstrike, praising Pakistan. He added that the reason for his resignation must be known to Congress only.

"This is an internal matter of Congress. Navjot Singh Sidhu has said many controversial things in the past year - like doubting the Balakot airstrike, saying trees were destroyed in Balakot. Was this not an insult to the Indian Army? On the other hand, he was praising Pakistan and hugging their Army officials. If he has resigned, the reason must be known to the Congress party. BJP has continuously questioned the intent behind his controversial questions," he said.

BJP slams Congress for blaming them over resignations

Slamming the Congress for blaming the BJP for the recent spate of resignations and defections, Union Minister Parkash Javadekar has said that Rahul Gandhi triggered the trend of resignations with his own resignation. He also said that family politics has led to Congress' loss.

"In Congress, Rahul Gandhi himself resigned and told others to do so, So party officials were resigning and now ministers are resigning. For the last 55 days, there has been no in charge of the party. Now they are blaming BJP for this also, which is unusual. I feel Congress should internally scrutinise the party. If one family does politics, such a situation only happens. They have lost the connection with the people," he added.

Sidhu quits ministry

Earlier in the day, Sidhu took to Twitter to share his handwritten resignation letter dated 10 June 2019, which he has submitted to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The news of his resignation comes over a month after the cabinet reshuffle where his portfolio was changed from that of local government, tourism and cultural affairs to Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources Department. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder made the decision after Sidhu missed a meeting for the review of the cabinet chaired by him. However, Sidhu did not take over the new post despite it being over a month, thereby courting more controversy.

Sidhu has been at loggerheads with the Punjab Chief Minister after he denied Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. He and his wife have publically attacked the Punjab CM repeatedly during the election campaign. He has also courted massive controversy over his remarks attacking PM Modi, Smriti Irani and BJP.
