Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has backed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the post of Congress president. The senior leader had earlier urged for a young leader in the party to step up and take the reins of the party.
Speaking to the media, he said, "I had first spoken about it (wanting a young leader as Congress president). Seventy percent Indians are young and a young India will respond to a young leader. On this basis Rahul ji was the chief, unfortunately, he decided to quit. In his place whichever young leader comes, including, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the party will support that person."
In a press release, he also said that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would get all-round support if chosen to take over as Congress president and that she was an ideal candidate.
"Priyanka would be a perfect choice to take over the party reins but it would all depend on the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which alone is authorised to take a decision in the matter," the statement quoted Captain Amarinder.
"Captain Amarinder made it clear that Priyanka was ideally suited to head the party, which needed a dynamic young leader to rebuild it after the recent Lok Sabha election loss. She has the intelligence and instinct to understand and relate to the needs of the nation, and also has the courage to take on any challenge and take the fight to victory," the statement added the Congress leader said.
This statement comes after Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal earlier on Monday called a meeting of all General Secretaries and State Incharges of All India Congress Committee on July 31 at 6.00 pm to decide on the party's next chief, sources said. The sources said that the meeting's agenda is aimed at deciding the next course of action for the party president post and to discuss the situation on the ground level.
Sources had said earlier that names of the probable candidates to take up the post of interim-president will be shortly submitted to Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal adding that the Congress Working Committee meet will decide the next Congress president only after the resolution of the Karnataka crisis.
There have been growing demands for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to take over her brother's place at the party helm, from the likes of former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh and senior party leader Sriprakash Jaiswal. While Rahul Gandhi had said that 'no one from the Gandhi family will be party president', Congress leaders have said that the decision is upto Priyanka herself.
