In yet another blow to Congress’ dream of ‘Mahagathbandhan’, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury has said that ‘pre-poll Mahagathbandhan is not practically possible in many states'.

“Pre-poll Mahagathbandhan in many states may not be a practical situation but to defeat BJP a post-poll Mahagathbandhan may just arise,” said Yechury.

The CPM leader also said that the main agenda of the party is to defeat BJP and for that the party will form tactical alliance.

“Mahagathbandhan is not practically possible in many states but the central agenda remains how to defeat the BJP for that we will form tactical alliance not unconditional alliance. Main task or central agenda will be to defeat the BJP and form an alternate Government,” said Sitaram Yechury.

“Alliance with which anti-BJP party is going to be formed will be decided later based on inputs from party's state committees. Strategy will be worked out to maximise Anti BJP votes. Whether to support Congress post poll will be decided later,” Yechury added.

The decision has been taken in CPM's Central Committee meeting.

This comes after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP chief Mayawati snubbed Congress and decided to go solo in the upcoming polls. As Akhilesh Yadav said that his party will be going to contest Madhya Pradesh on its own, Mayawati said that BSP will go solo in both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan assembly elections.

"I have waited enough. I can't wait any longer. We are talking to BSP, but can't wait for Congress. Nobody waits this long in politics," said Akhilesh Yadav.

On a similar note, Mayawati on October 3, dumped the Congress ahead of the 2019 General Assembly elections, delivering a hammer-blow to the grand old party’s big ‘Mahagathbandhan’ dream. Putting the Congress on the mat, the BSP supremo announced, while addressing a press briefing, that her party will contest Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh elections alone and will not be allying with the Congress.

“We will contest Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh elections alone. We will not gain anything if we will go in alliance with the Congress at any cost. We will not bow in front of Congress. We have power to uproot our political rivals on our own,” said Mayawati.
