While the senior leadership of the Congress party has been tight-lipped about the entire Ayodhya issue, Congress MLA of Karnataka Roshan Baig has given out a statement that speaks in support of the construction of Ram Mandir.
With an extremely guarded position of the Party towards the issue until now, the Congress MLA has extended his support to the building of Ram Mandir in the Ayodhya conflict.
Voicing his support, the MLA said, “If not in India, will it be built in Pakistan?”
Baig also affirmed in his statement that Muslims of Karnataka and are not against the construction of Ram Mandir, and additionally accusing the Bhartiya Janta Party of polarising and creating a communal rift between Hindu and Muslim with the elections approaching.
Speaking to Republic TV Baig said, "Because of Lok Sabha elections are coming, BJP has brought up the issue. They are crying to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims. If Ram Mandir is not constructed in India will it be constructed in Pakistan? They just wanted to keep the issue alive till elections and after that, they will forget. They are blaming our Muslims brothers that they don't want to build the Ram temple."
He mentioned how the poet and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal who penned the verses of the song ‘Sare Jahan se Accha’ had said it then that Sri Ram is ‘Imam-e-Hind.’
He added, "Ram Mandir should be built, we are not against the construction. Because of the impending elections and Lok Sabha 2019, suddenly BJP is raising the issue of Ram Mandir and Ordinance.”
Questioning the BJP’s intentions, he says, “Does BJP want to create a rift in the society? Do you want to create again a rift between the Hindus and Muslims? We respect the sentiments of our Hindu brothers. Now the matter is before the court, so I want to make the matter very clear that as the elections are approaching I do not want any tension.”
He appeals the BJP Government to provide jobs to the boys and girls, “There is so much unemployment among the Muslim community. They should provide them with a good education. The BJP is repeating ‘Ram Mandir’ ‘Ram Mandir’ as if the Muslims are against the construction. No, we are not against the construction of Ram Mandir. It will be constructed in India.”
He further added, “If the issue was left to the Saints, it would have been resolved long back. This RSS, BJP, and VHP want to keep this issue alive till the elections, then after the elections, they’ll forget.”
He mentioned that he has not received any calls to retract his statement
Republic TV caught up with Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who in December 2017 while representing the Sunni Waqf Board pursued that the Supreme Court delayed its hearings in the matter till July 2019, after the upcoming General Elections.
On October 29, when asked, "It's been deferred. It's something you had asked for", Sibal replied: "I'm not in the matter. It's for the court to decide when to hear and when not to hear. Who am I?" He was then asked: "Do you think this will have political ramifications? “To this, Sibal said, "I have no idea. You know much better. You journalists know much better than us"
At that time, speaking to Republic TV, Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, when asked about the conflict of interest between Kapil Sibal the lawyer and Kapil Sibal the politician, had said, "As a lawyer Kapil Sibal can argue anything, but if he brings his political judgment and opinion in a court proceeding designed to dissuade the court from hearing the matter, it's very regrettable."
These perplexing difference in their views strongly displays ambiguity in the Party’s stand towards the Ayodhya issue.
