Senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and KC Venugopal reached Rahul Gandhi's residence for the meeting, which has taken place to chalk out a strategy for the party following the massive failure in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Dr Ajoy Kumar has tendered his resignation and Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan is likely to resign to Rahul Gandhi, taking moral responsibility for the defeat of the party in their respective states. Meanwhile, a turmoil has erupted in the coalition Congress -JD(S) government in Karnataka and a meeting has been called by the Grand Old party's state unit to discuss important issues and resolve the differences. Congress Party's state unit has called for a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meet on May 29 in Bengaluru.

On Saturday, Ashok Chavan offered to resign from his post following the party's downfall in the state of Maharashtra. On May 25, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath also offered to resign from the post of Congress state unit chief in the wake of the party's drubbing in the recently-concluded general elections.

Decimated by the BJP which won 28 out of the 29 seats in Jharkhand, the Congress could only open its account by winning Chhindwara parliamentary constituency. Congress won only one seat in the state out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

Earlier, during the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday, top leaders KC Venugopal, AK Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Randeep Singh Surjewala addressed the media and said that Rahul Gandhi presented his resignation which the CWC outrightly rejected.

"Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation which the CWC members unanimously and with one voice rejected and requested the Congress president for his guidance and leadership," Surjewala had said.
