Congress National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill has applied for a ticket at Punjab Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Chandigarh. He will be contesting from Lok Sabha seat Sri Anandpur Sahib in Punjab.

The constituency has nine segments of Vidhan Sabha.

In 2014, Ambika Soni had contested from Sri Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. She had lost from SAD's Prem Singh Chandumajra.

In 2009, Congress' Ravneet Singh Bittu had won from the seat.

His career follows a similar trajectory as that of Randeep Surjewala who is a spokesperson and and MLA from Haryana.

Surjwala has been a Congress spokesperson and also a lawmaker from Haryana.

He had recently contested from Jind for the state assembly bypoll. He had lost in the bypoll which was considered a prestige battle between the BJP, Congress, INLD.

The high-stake election was considered a referendum on the Manohar Lal Khattar government and also a semi-final ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

Ruling BJP candidate Krishan Middha won the Jind bypolls which is seen as a prestige battle for the party and Congress. Congress' Randeep Surjewala was routed and came in third in the polls.

Middha won a total of 50566 votes with a margin of 12935 votes. JJP's Digvijay Singh Chautala garners 37631 votes and Congress' RS Surjwala gets 22740 votes

He has been an MLA from Haryana having contested in 1993 bye-election, and state assemblies from 1996, 2000 and 2005, winning in 1996 and 2005. He was also a minister in the Haryana cabinet in 2005 under Bhupinder Singh Hooda's chief ministership holding with portfolios of Transport & Civil Aviation; PWD (Water Supply & Sanitation) and Parliamentary Affairs.

With Shergill applying to contest on a Congress ticket is the latest on the big moves made by the Congress, as the party had recently appointed the Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as its Uttar Pradesh (East) General Secretary, thereby inducting her into the party.
