Congress Rajya Sabha whip Bhubaneswar Kalita resigns as J&K bill is tabled

Congress Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, Bhubaneswar Kalita, tendered his resignation on the day the proposal to revoke Article 370 was presented in the Upper House of the Parliament.

Congress Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, Bhubaneswar Kalita, tendered his resignation on the day Article 370 was scrapped in the Upper House of the Parliament.

Kalita, who is from Assam, made the announcement in a tweet, writing, “I have resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership today. #Assam.” 

As per reports, he was one of the four Congress MPs who filed an Adjournment Motion in the Rajya Sabha amid the massive outcry with regards to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The others were Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Ambika Soni. 

In an exclusive interaction with Republic TV stated that he has submitted his resignation and it has been accepted. However, he was not willing to share the reasons, "I have not made the resignation letter public. But when time will come, I will release it to the press and also make a statement."  

He also refused to answer when asked what Congress' stand on the revocation of Article 370 was. He said that one would've to wait till August 10, when the Congress Working Committee is set to meet.

Kalita had assumed office a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in 2014. Previously, he has also been a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament. Before this, he had also been an MLA in the Assam Assembly and held the portfolio for Commerce and Industry and Information Technology as a Minister in the Assam Assembly. 

His resignation comes close on the heels of Gandhi family loyalist Sanjay Singh’s resignation as the Congress Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament.  Singh had joined the BJP a few days ago.

While joining, Singh had said,  "Under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah we have joined the BJP is on a movement to fulfill the dreams of the people, to reposition India's global status as superpower. I am sure we will contribute towards the Majboot thoughts of Majboot party, with inclusivity. These are not only PM Modi's slogans but also his ideology, for which we will contribute. It is my privilege to work for the party with honesty, faith and commitment."
