Amid the series of resignations from senior Congress leaders in the aftermath of the massive loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar on Monday has also offered to resign from his post. Even after the Congress party did fairly well in the state of Punjab by winning 8 out of 13 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 polls, Sunil Jakhar lost his parliamentary constituency of Gurdaspur to newly-appointed BJP leader Sunny Deol
Taking moral responsibility of defeat, Jakhar offered to sent his resignation to Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
Significantly, the Grand Old Party crossed the halfway mark in Punjab as senior Congress leader and current CM Captain Amarinder Singh made his stronghold in the northern state.
This development comes amid a series of resignations from the Grand Old Party, party president Rahul Gandhi's being one of them. On Monday, senior party leader held a crucial meeting at Rahul Gandhi's residence in Delhi, which was attended by Ashok Gehlot and KC Venugopal.
Earlier, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Dr Ajoy Kumar has tendered his resignation and Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan is likely to resign to Rahul Gandhi, taking moral responsibility for the defeat of the party in their respective states. The top leaders will also be discussing the matter of their resignation during the meeting.
On Saturday, Ashok Chavan offered to resign from his post following the party's downfall in the state of Maharashtra. On May 25, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath also offered to resign from the post of Congress state unit chief in the wake of the party's drubbing in the recently-concluded general elections.
While Congress chief Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from the party on May 25 during the CWC meeting in the presence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, his party leadership rejected his resignation.
"Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation which the CWC members unanimously and with one voice rejected and requested the Congress president for his guidance and leadership," Randeep Singh Surjewala said while addressing the press briefing after the CWC meeting.
