Update at 5:29 PM: Aljo K Joseph reaches AICC HQ minutes after the hearing on Christian Michel at Patiala House court concludes
Even as Christian Michel was remanded into CBI custody for five days, the BJP has hit out at the Congress over the affiliation of the lawyer representing the AgustaWestland middleman.
Taking to Twitter, BJP Mumbai spokesperson Suresh Nakhua has pointed out that Aljo K Joseph, who is the counsel for Christian Michel, is a Supreme Court advocate and the "National incharge, legal department, Indian youth Congress".
Nakhua has tweeted these details having first underlined the quoted sections mentioned above, writing:
The identity of Christian Michel's representation in India had been unknown through most of Wednesday, even as his Italian lawyer Rosemary Patrici and others sought visas to come to India. Minutes before his appearance before the Patiala House Court, Republic TV learnt that it would be Joseph who would represent Michel.
Along with remanding Michel to CBI custody, the judge also allowed him to meet with his lawyer daily for an hour, after Joseph argued that "He is not aware of Indian law, hence I want to meet him daily".
The court hearing also revealed that the CBI, which had sought custody for 14 days, is tracking a conspiracy involving 37 million euros (about Rs 300 crore).
Christian Michel was extradited from Dubai, landing in New Delhi at 10:32 pm on Tuesday night. He was subsequently shifted to CBI's headquarters where he spent the night.
The AgustaWestland case refers to alleged improprieties in awarding the contract for procurement of VVIP choppers by India. Michel, a middleman, is accused of bribing numerous officials and potentially politicians, in his bid to secure the deal during the UPA years.
Speaking at a poll rally in Rajasthan earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alluded to numerous Congress politicians, naming Sonia Gandhi, and remarked that it remains to be seen what the 'secret-keeper' (Michel) reveals.
