CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim has accused the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, of lying on the floor of Parliament over the issue of NC leader Farooq Abdullah's detention in Kashmir in the wake of abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution on Monday.

The Left leader attached a video grab of Shah in Parliament last month, in which the Home Minister said Abdullah was neither detained nor arrested. Salim said, “Amit Shah lied on the floor of the parliament claiming that Farooq Abdullah didn't come to Lok Sabha on his own will but today we all know that Mr. Abdullah had been under detention since 4 August, under the draconian PSA. Does India's Home Minister has any credibility today?"

A day before the abrogation, Home Minister had explicitly said in the Parliament that the National Conference leader, who missed the Parliament session that day, cannot be brought on 'gunpoint' and that he is at home by his own will. Later in the day, the former CM of J&K accused Amit Shah of 'lying.' Home Minister on August 6 said, "I have made it clear thrice, Farooq Abdullah ji is at his home, he is not under house arrest, he is not under detention. He is in good health, he is enjoying, if he doesn't want to come, we can't bring him on gunpoint".

Farooq Abdullah's detention

On Sunday night, the Ministry of Home Affairs detained the 81-year-old patron of the National Conference (NC) under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA). Abdullah, a former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, was under house arrest since August 5, when the Centre announced abrogation of the special status given to the state under Article 370 and its bifurcation into Union territories. While there is no bar on meeting relatives and friends, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister will continue to stay in his house. As per the PSA provisions, the government could detain a person for up to two years, although, for 'first-time offenders' the length of the detention is limited to six months. However, in the case of 'no improvement in the conduct of the detainee' the detention can be extended to its full course of two years. The PSA act was initially promulgated during Sheikh Abdullah, the father of Farooq Abdullah's tenure.
