The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat lambasted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre on Monday. This criticism came on the eve of the NDA government completing 100 days in office. She alleged that the Union government had indulged in the destruction of democracy in its first 100 days. Indirectly referring to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, she alleged that millions of people had been denied the rights of communication and expression. Karat maintained that this was a record low in the history of India.

‘Loss of livelihood’ 

She further added that the second most important issue in the 100 days was the livelihood of people. Alleging that millions of workers had lost their jobs, she attacked the government for giving vague statements instead of granting them some relief. Karat, who is also a member of the CPM Politburo, questioned the capability of the government to provide any assurance to the workers, who were on the verge of unemployment. Claiming that eight industries had admitted being in deep crisis, she accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of neither acknowledging it nor working towards improving the situation.

Congress targets the Central government 

Earlier, the Congress party mocked the Centre for its performance in the first 100 days. It described the period as a reflection of tyranny, chaos, and anarchy. In a series of tweets, it slammed the BJP for the alleged mishandling of the economy. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi too accused the Centre of subverting democracy and extending a stranglehold on the media.
