Days after announcing free rides on Delhi Metro for women, Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday has announced 'Free Lifeline Electricity of 200 units to all'. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Kejriwal said that household consuming 200 units or less power will now get a Zero Bill every month. However, if a household will use more than 200 units, then existing rates of electricity will apply, he added.
Furthermore, he added that those consuming 201 to 401 units of electricity will continue to get 50 percent power subsidy from the Delhi government.
"If a household uses more than 200 units, then existing rates will apply. This will encourage people to consume less power and conserve energy. Between 201-400, the existing 'Half Bill' introduced in 2015 will continue," Kejriwal said.
Detailing the power charges for the residents of Delhi, he said:
"People used to pay Rs 622 for 200 units of electricity until yesterday, now it's free. For 250 units they used to pay Rs 800, now they will pay Rs 252. For 300 units they used to pay Rs 971, now they will pay Rs 526. For 400 units, they used to pay Rs 1320, now they'll pay Rs 1075."
Responding to the claims of a "freebie" ahead of the Assembly elections, the AAP convenor said that since the citizens have voted for an honest government, it is giving the money saved back to the people.
"If the infrastructure has improved, if the financial condition of the electricity boards have improved, if the revenue has increased, if so many transformers have been installed to assure you 24 hours electricity, so this is free because you voted for honest government. We don't loot the money. Whatever the money is saved, we are giving the money to you," he added.
This development has come a day after Arvind Kejriwal claimed that for the fifth consecutive year there are no electricity tariff hike, adding that the national capital has the lowest electricity tariffs in the country and is the only place with 24/7 electricity.
