Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on Thursday stirred a huge debate by making comments about the economy. He said that the PM Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is confused that development that can be attained through welfare schemes. The former finance minister appears to believe that demonetisation and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) were badly timed. He said, “I was a supporter of GST. Govt was in a hurry to implement it from July. Now, GSTN which is the backbone is failing.”
In his article for a leading daily, Yashwant also took a jibe at the raids conducted by Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation and said that it has become "a new game to instill fear in the minds of people."
On speaking exclusively to Republic TV, the former Finance Minister said, 'there was no party platform available to me for raising an issue of this sort and this is not an issue which can be raised and discussed within 20 minutes. I have raised serious issues and they can only be raised in the manner in which I have raised them.’
When questioned why the matter was not raised during the National Executive meet, he said he did not do so because he knows what happens in a National Executive meeting. He further questioned the amount of time utilised to discuss a certain ‘economical political resolution' was adopted.
Earlier in the day, BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha took to Twitter and said, "I'm of the firm opinion that everything that has been written by Mr. Sinha is entirely in the party's and national interest.” Responding to a questioned based on his support, the former Finance Minister said, 'While I am grateful to Shatrughan Sinha for his support. However, I also know that quietly within their hearts there are many people who feel that I had stated the truth and given the opportunity, they would like to say something, when and if they pick up the courage.’
