Congress party landed itself in yet another controversy on Friday, after former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao's grandson NV Subhash issued charges at the Grand Old Party of sidelining the former PM after 1996 poll debacle.
Speaking to media on the 98th birth anniversary of Narasimha Rao, his grandson said that the Congress party has been sidelining the contributions made by former PM Rao and attributing him with the failures of the party. He went onto state that after the death of Narasimha Rao in 2004, Sonia Gandhi, who took on as the Congress chief at that time, and other Congress leaders did not speak about the contributions of the former PM or remembered him.
"In 1996 following the debacle of the Congress party, he (Narasimha Rao) has been sidelined because of many issues, which is not really concerned to his stature or the government's policies. But the Congress party thought, other than the Gandhi-Nehru family if there is a person who they don't want to be seen, they started sidelining him. After Mrs Sonia Gandhi took as the President of the Congress, we know how the party failed. From 2004 t0 2014, the Congress party was in power and 2004, he died, after that Congress party never used to utter his words. All the failures of the Congress party have been attributed to Mr PV Narasimha Rao and all the contributions that he made were not treated equally. The failures have been contributed to him, but if they win the election or something good happens, it is contributed to the Congress party," said Narasimha Rao grandson Subhash said.
He further hailed PM Modi for praising Narasimha Rao and his contributions in the economic policies of the country in his address in Lok Sabha. He further lashed out at the Congress claiming that while PM Modi praised Mr Rao in the Lower House of the Parliament, the Grand Old Party leader did not mention his name or even paid tributes to him.
"Recently we know Narendra Modi ji, he was addressing the Lok Sabha, he had praised Mr Narasimha Rao because of the contribution he has made for the country and the economic policies which have been implemented in 1991. We did not deviate from the economic policies, and now we see the fruits of the policies. When Mr Narendra Modi gave so much praise in the Lok Sabha, the Congress did not even attribute anything to him. If you can see today, none of the Telangana Congress Pradesh leaders has paid their tributes," he added.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister late PV Narasimha Rao on his 98th birth anniversary and called him a "veteran administrator" who "led the nation at a crucial juncture of our history."
The Congress party also paid a tribute to Narasimha Rao on Twitter, however, spelt his name wrong in the caption:
The ninth Prime Minister of India, Narasimha Rao assumed office in June 1991 and stayed in power till May 1996. He is credited with bringing many economic reforms in the country particularly for dismantling the License Raj in the country. Narasimha Rao is also known as the 'Father of Indian Economic Reforms.'
Notably, former Prime Minister P.V Narasimha Rao had resigned after his ruling Congress Party suffered severe losses in India's general election in 1996.
