Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made a courtesy call to Shiv Sena Supremo Uddhav Thackeray and extended his gratitude toward him for lending his support to NDA candidate Harivansh who was elected as the 13th Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.
Within the political circle, the phone call hints at a thaw in ties between Bharatiya Janta Party and Shiv Sena.
Earlier, NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman with the total of 125 votes.
Following the big win, PM Narendra Modi congratulated Harivansh Narayan Singh for the achievement. On the floor of the house, he said, "I, on behalf of the house, would like to congratulate Harivansh Narayan Singh for becoming the Deputy Chairman. We are pleased to see that Arun Jaitley is amongst us after an improvement in his health."
"Today we mark the anniversary of the Quit India Movement. Harivansh Ji comes from Ballia, known as the land of freedom fighters. He has been inspired by Loknayak JP. He also spent time in Varanasi. Harivansh Ji is well read and has written a lot. He has served society for years."

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday announced that the election for the post-Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha will be held at 11 am on August 9. After the retirement of former Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien of the Congress Party, the post of deputy chairperson had been lying vacant since June 2018.

Harivansh Narayan Singh was a journalist. He worked as the editor-in-chief of Hindi daily Prabhat Khabar. He was also among the three JD(U) MPs who were elected unopposed from Bihar in the year 2014.
Opposition Candidate- BK Hariprasad
BK Hariprasad will represent Congress in Rajya Sabha for the deputy chairman election who is a three-time parliamentarian. He represents the state of Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha. He is also a general secretary of the All India Congress Committee.
