Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was detained by the Rajasthan police at the Jaipur Airport and informed him that his entry to Rajasthan’s Nagaur district has been restricted. Mevani was in Rajasthan as he was scheduled to speak on the Indian Constitution and Dr BR Ambedkar.
After he was detained, he expressed his shock and said that “if this is happening to an elected representative then what must be the condition of an ordinary citizen and Dalits in Vasundhara Raje rule.”
“Today, immediately after I landed at Jaipur airport, few cops made me sign a letter saying MLA Jignesh Mevani's entry is restricted in entire Nagor district of Rajasthan. I was going there to talk about Indian constitution and Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
This is absolutely unconstitutional and violative of my fundamental rights. If they can do this with an elected representative then what must be the condition of an ordinary citizen and dalits in Vasundhara Raje rule,” he said.
Mevani further said that the cops are “forcing me to fly back to Ahmedabad and said that ‘you are not allowed to move around even in Jaipur’,”.
“Now The DCP is saying you are not allowed to move around even in Jaipur and they are forcing me to fly back to Ahmedabad and also not allowing to hold even a press conference. This is shocking,” he added.
Jignesh Mevani also alleged that the cops told him that the order to detain him was passed from higher authorities.
“For the past two hours I am asking the on-duty DCP of Jaipur whether he has any order to restrict my movement he has no answer. He saying 'upar se bola hai'. He took away local dalit activist's mobile also. As per law, this is a case of legally confining me, if not kidnapping.Shame,” he said.
Jignesh Mevani also lashed at the Vasundhara Raje government for the move and challenged Raje that he will make sure that the elections will be ‘exciting’.
“If Bhagwat was going at Nagor district of Rajasthan to talk about Manusmriti, Raje would have allowed him. But since I was supposed to talk about the philosophy of Baba Saheb Ambedkar they are restricting my movements. Vasundhara ji, hamara bhi vada raha chunav me maza ayenga. (Vasundhara ji, I promise you the elections will be exciting and entertaining this time),“ said Mevani.
