Anti-corruption crusader and well known social activist Anna Hazare is about to sit on a fast from January 30 in his village Ralegan Siddhi over his Lokpal & Lokayukta demand. Just before his fast, the Maharashtra cabinet has taken a decision which will be a milestone in the history of the state. The Fadnavis cabinet has approved Lokpal amendments as per which the Chief Minister of the state & all his ministers will come under the ambit of the Lokayukta. Now, Lokayukta can interrogate the Chief Minister of the state and in-camera.

The government says that this decision will bring more transparency in its functioning & will also make all the ministers more accountable. Minister Girish Mahajan said 'we all are happy with this decision. This was was one of the demands of Anna Hazare which the government has fulfilled'.

During the previous Congress-NCP government’s tenure, many scams had come to light. The then Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had to resign because of the Adarsh building scam. There are allegations that Ashok Chavan had misused his powers & gave certain approvals to the building. For this favor, Chavan's relatives allegedly got flats in the Adarsh building. As of now, this matter is sub judice.

Anna Hazare has welcomed this move but he is still firm on sitting on the fast. According to Anna Hazare, the central government has not fulfilled their promise on Lokpal. Hazare has been fighting for the Lokpal for many years now. He ran a historic anti-corruption movement during the UPA government and this is widely cited as one of the reasons for the Congress party’s massive defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

Before the last Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had promised that they would appoint a Lokpal but even after four-and-half-years in power, the government has not yet done so. Anna Hazare said that this time it's a 'do or die' fight for the Lokpal. To convince Anna Hazare, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had sent his close aide & Minister Girish Mahajan to Anna's village but Mahajan's attempts appear to have been in vain as Anna is adamant on sitting on fast for the Lokpal. His fast will begin on Wednesday at 11 am at the ‘Yadav Baba temple’.
