West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee took out a rally in Kolkata on Thursday protesting against the Centre's NRC (National Register of Citizens) move in Assam. Addressing the rally in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee made a strong statement, stating that neither the Congress nor the Left can fight BJP in West Bengal, only Trinamool Congress can fight the Narendra Modi-led BJP party. This statement has come from the TMC chief months after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in which TMC won more seats in West Bengal than BJP.

Launching a scathing attack at the BJP over NRC, Mamata Banerjee also said that TMC will teach BJP a lesson if it will touch people in the name of NRC in West Bengal.

"If BJP touches even one person in Bengal in the name of NRC, we will teach them a lesson. Those trying to divide people in the name of NRC are playing with fire. You (BJP) won't be able to shut Bengal's mouth as you did in Assam by using your police. Suddenly, you are teaching us religion as if we don't celebrate Eid, Durga Puja, Muharram & Chhath Puja," Mamata Banerjee said addressing the rally. Her remarks have also come in the build-up to the assembly elections in West Bengal which are likely to take place in 2021.

TMC's anti-NRC rally

The TMC supremo along with her party colleagues took out the rally from Sinthee More in North Kolkata. She has been accusing BJP of trying to divide people through the exercise of NRC. Earlier, the ruling party in West Bengal took out rallies in other parts of the state opposing the Modi government's move to update citizenship register. As per the NRC data published on August 31, over 19 lakh of the 3.29 crore applicants in Assam did not find a place in the final National Register of Citizens.

Mamata attacks Centre

Earlier, the TMC supremo had targeted the Modi government, accusing it of not allowing enough money for expenditure on state development.

"The state government earns from the public to carry out their expenditure, unlike the Centre, which has an RBI and can withdraw money as per their wish at any time and they can also print new currency. Centre does not give us enough to spend and they take so much tax from the state. The central government has closed down Sarwa Shiksha Abhiyaan and due to that, we cannot work. We could have done much more," Mamata had alleged.
