A massive political fight has broken out over the BJP's proposal to convert the Teen Murti memorial for Jawaharlal Nehru into a memorial for all the former Prime ministers. Following the Central government’s proposal, former Prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that Nehru's legacy is for the nation and not just about the Congress.
Asking the Prime Minister to respect the sentiments of the people, Manmohan Singh wrote in the letter that the museum must “retain its primary focus on Nehru because of his unique role having spent almost ten years in jail between the early 1920s and the mid-1940s”.

While recalling that no attempts were made to “change the nature and character” of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Manmohan Singh claimed, in the letter, that in the current circumstances it seemed to be “part of the agenda of the Government of India now”.
In the letter, the former Prime Minister also quoted the late statesman, Atal Bihari Vajpayee to make a case for keeping the exclusivity of the museum to Nehru intact, saying, “Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji said in his moving speech to Parliament when Panditji passed away: ‘Such a resident may never grace Teen Murti again… In spite of a difference of opinion we have nothing but respect for his great ideals, his integrity, his love for the country and his indomitable courage’.”
Singh also asked Prime Minister Modi to “leave the Teen Murti complex undisturbed as it is” and “keep Teen Murti as a memorial to our first Prime Minister Pandit Nehru”.
Now, a major political fight has ensued between the Congress and the BJP over Manmohan Singh's letter to PM Narendra Modi.
Reacting to the issue, former CM of Madhya Pradesh and Congress leader Motilal Vora said that there should be no tinkering with Nehru’s museum as “he was a leader who created a new India,” adding “it seems like the Centre’s agenda to wipe out Nehru’s legacy.”
On the other hand, BJP leader Zafar Islam said the Congress is just worried about its own legacy and that “they don’t care about paying respects to other great leaders.”
