One of the most animated, outspoken and intriguing personalities in Indian cricket, recently-retired superstar Gautam Gambhir, spoke exclusively to Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami on topics which were never taken up before and in the process of doing so, finally declared that was ready to join politics.

In a no holds barred interaction, the 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup-winner said that while he hadn't given the matter much of a thought, he would be willing to step into the (political) field if the people of this country desire so.

"If people think that I'm good enough, and if I believe that I can make a change in this country, and if I feel that strongly and if I have the energy, I will definitely do something for the country to make it a better place. I will make sure that I do everything possible in my own capacity, and if you all (people of this country) believe that I should get into it (politics), I'll definitely give it a thought," responded Gambhir when asked if he should begin a political career.

The 37-year-old, who retired from international cricket on December 4, has been heavily linked since the past few months of joining politics. There were even reports making round that the Delhi-born former cricketer could join BJP and contest 2019 polls from the National Capital.

Gambhir is most prominent among the few Indian cricketers who frequently takes a stand when one is required and has been known to be fearless in doing so, whether the issue be pollution, nationalism or anything else. Recently, in response to the hazardous air quality in New Delhi, Gambhir hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as well as the central environment ministry.

Also in 2018, he shot off a befitting response to Shahid Afridi when the Pakistani cricketer hit out at India over Kashmir.
