Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati has launched an attack at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the latter's holy dip at the Kumbh Mela on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has brought in the symbolism of the sacred Sangam Triveni dip, asking "Will a 'SHAHI' dip in Sangam by PM Modi be able to wash sins of reneging poll promises, treachery and other state wrongs?"

She then proceeds to state some of the issues on which she has raised her question, mentioning "demonetisation, GST, vengeance casteism, communal and authoritarian rule."

She has also questioned the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna which was also launched by the Prime Minister on the same day, in UP CM Yogi Adityanath's former bastion Gorakhpur. The scheme operationalises the massive Budget announcement by the Modi government wherein Rs 6000 per year (in three equal installments) will be provided to small and marginal farmer families having combined land holdings of up to 2 acres. On this, Mayawati's criticism is as follows:

For his part, PM Modi had also not balked at mentioning Mayawati while in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. He had taken on her 'Gathbandhan' alliance with her former-rival Akhilesh Yadav, calling the duo the 'Mahamilavat' (Massive-adulteration) alliance. It was after this that he had made his high-profile holy dip at the Kumbh mela which he capped off by personally washing the feet of Safai Karamsevaks at the massive religious gathering, before extolling their efforts towards ensuring a 'Swachh Kumbh'.

Uttar Pradesh is all set to witness a massive three-way battle in this year's Lok Sabha elections, between regional powers SP-BSP, the BJP which had steamrolled the elections in 2014, and the Congress which had played its trump card by formally inducting Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into the party fold and installing her as the party's general secretary for UP East, with Jyotiraditya Scindia being appointed general secretary for UP West.
