The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam working president MK Stalin on Sunday has filed nomination for the post of party president. It is learnt that the party's General Council meeting will be held on 28th August where a voice vote will b taken to elect the next President of DMK. The president-elect will then appoint other top-level leaders according to the rules of the part. In the same breath, party's Principal Secretary Duraimurugan has filed the nominations for the post of treasurer which was held by Stalin until now.
Meanwhile, MK Alagiri, the estranged son of late DMK chief M Karunanidhi, has stated that he will file nominations for upcoming by-elections. However, according to MK Alagiri, it does not specify whether he will do the same as an independent candidate or as part of a political organisation.
When asked about Stalin's nomination for party leadership, MK Alagiri said," What can I do if Stalin files nomination? Do you expect me to second it? Go ask Stalin about filing nomination, not me. We are not filing any nomination. If there is a by-election we will file nomination".
Earlier, a day before MK Stalin was likely to be made DMK Chief following Karunanidhi's demise, MK Stalin's brother MK Alagiri stake claim to Kalaignar's legacy. The first DMK executive committee meeting after the demise of Karunanidhi was scheduled for Tuesday. After Alagiri visited Karunanidhi's memorial on Monday, he claimed that the cadre support is with him.
"I have put forward my request to my father and he also is aware of my decision, you will not find out the same now, only time will tell, Thalivars blessings and wishes are with me and also the blessings and support of the people are with me", he said.
When asked whether it is his final decision, he said,"Yes it is. I told you that I have expressed my sentiments relating to the party with my Father".
However, MK Stalin had no plans to bring back MK Alagiri in the party again. The Party had decided to elevate MK Stalin as President.
