Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a blistering attack on the government and particularly on PM Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

“Under UPA regime, the Rafale aircraft was pegged at Rs 520 crores. I don't know what happened or who was spoken to, but PM went to France- who he went with, everyone knows. and magically the prices of the aircraft went up to Rs 1600 crore. The Defence Minister is seated here- She first said that I will inform the price of the aircraft- she said this in public. after that, Defence Minister clearly said that I can't give the details because the French government and the Indian government has a secrecy pact. I myself met the French president, and I myself asked him- is there any pact between the 2 governments, and the French President said that there is no such pact between the governments,”

As soon as Rahul Gandhi issued the controversial statement, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman objected to it. Her objection got a reply from Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, who said,

“He’s not yielding, no he’s not yielding.”

Rahul Gandhi kept on speaking, but whenever the Defence Minister or the Speaker Sumitra Mahajan herself tried to cut in between, the Congress leader’s speech was dictated by Scindia who kept on supporting Rahul, saying, “Madam, he is not yielding.”

Meanwhile, France has issued an official response to allegations levelled by Congress president Rahul Gandhi during his speech on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha.

"We have noted the statement of Mr Rahul Gandhi before the Indian Parliament. France and India concluded in 2008 a Security agreement, which legally binds the two States to protect the classified information provided by the partner, that could impact security and operational capabilities of the defence equipment of India or France. These provisions naturally apply to the IGA concluded on 23 September 2016 on the acquisition of 36 Rafale aircraft and their weapons. As the President of the French Republic indicated publicly in an interview given to India Today on 9th March 2018, In India and in France, when a deal is very sensitive, we can’t reveal all details," read the clarification from the French government.

Earlier in the day, responding to the accusations made by Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Nirmala Sitharaman, she states that the Rafale deal signed by the French government and former Defence Minister AK Antony and that the Secrecy agreement with France was signed in 2008 and Rafale deal was also covered in it.
