A big political war has erupted over BJP President Amit Shah giving Rajiv Gandhi reference on NRC. For the second straight day, opposition blocked Shah from completing his speech in the Parliament. Congress MP and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's aide Ahmed Patel slammed Amit Shah for his Rajiv Gandhi reference and said, "Rajivji championed Assam and Punjab accords knowing it will adversely affect party’s chances in polls."

Further, taking a swipe on Amit Shah over his remark that Congress didn't have the guts to roll out NRC, Patel said it's "not guts but greed for power which is driving them to polarise India over NRC."

On Tuesday, Amit Shah tore into the Opposition over citizenship debate in the Rajya Sabha. Slamming the Congress party for its hypocrisy, Amit Shah said, “In 1985, Rajiv Gandhi signed Assam accord. What was the core of the Assam accord - NRC was the soul of the accord.”

Shah while reminding the Congress that it was a leader from their party who had signed the accord on NRC in 1985, said “It was an initiative taken by Rajiv Gandhi, but you didn't show courage to implement this, We did. NRC was initiative of the Prime Minister from the Congress party.”

The BJP President’s statements created a massive uproar in the Parliament with many members walking down to the well of the House, leading to a brief adjournment.

Former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi had signed the Assam accord on August 15,1985. The accord says to ‘detect, delete and expel’ the foreigners who entered India after 1971. While signing the accord, Rajiv Gandhi had promised to take immediate and practical steps to expel foreigners.
