‘The Opposition’s grand alliance has no agenda, but Modi’s removal,’ claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an interview with ‘Swarajya’ - an Indian monthly print magazine. In the second and final part of the interview, PM Modi spoke on various issues including the challenges faced by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government by the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ or the grand alliance, reportedly forged by the Opposition parties in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

PM Modi said that the comparison of the previous grand alliances of 1977 and 1989 is “flawed”, as in 1977, the motive of the alliance was to “protect our democracy” and in 1989 to defeat the “record breaking corruption”of Bofors, adding, today’s alliances are about their “personal survival and power politics”. The Prime Minister then claimed that the Grand Alliance has “no agenda except to remove Modi.”

The Prime Minister also slammed the Congress party, saying the grand old party is desperate to garner allies to fight a “battle for their existence”.

PM Narendra Modi also questioned “who is the cementing element for the alliance” as he claimed the Congress has transformed like a regional party.

The PM also said that in the opposition there is no Grand Alliance, but just a grand race to be prime minister. He then pointed at the rift between the parties over the prime ministerial candidate. He also claimed that “hatred for Modi is the sole gluing force for the Opposition”.

He further said the “next election will be a choice between governance and development on one side and chaos on the other”.

To a question on whether the BJP's allies are on the same page with it and if the NDA is weaker today, Modi asserted that his party views the alliance not as a compulsion but as an article of faith.

The Opposition is trying to stitch a grand alliance to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government in the 2019 polls.
